Step by step
On macOS Ventura or later, open the image in Preview and choose Tools > Remove Background, or right-click the file in Finder and choose Quick Actions > Remove Background. On older macOS, Preview's Instant Alpha tool (in the Markup toolbar) lets you click and drag over the background to select it, then press Delete.
How it works
- Choose, drop or paste one or more images.
- Pick a mode. "Photo (AI)" runs a segmentation model on your device; the first run downloads it once (about 44 MB). "Signature, logo or stamp" removes a plain background colour instantly, with no download.
- Choose transparent, white or any colour, and the size. You can change these afterwards without re-running.
- Download PNG (transparent) or JPG (solid background).

Honest limits
- Fine hair, fur, glass and smoke can leave soft or missing edges.
- Objects that are the same colour as the background are hard to separate.
- Images larger than 4,000 pixels on the longest side are scaled down.
- iPhone HEIC photos must be converted to JPG first in most browsers.
Your images stay private
Most free background removers upload your photo to a server. CutRuler runs the model in your browser, so your images never leave your device. That matters for signatures, ID photos and unreleased products.
